Teeth Whitening Comparison - The Best Technique For You

by David A. Hirsch

Lately there has been a surge of distinctive types of teeth whitening. I'm going to explain them and point to the best one for you.

Type 1: Whitening Toothpaste - This is the only whitening technique that does not use a bleaching agent. They can be found everywhere and are used just like regular toothpaste. The chemical abrasives contained in their formula remove mere surface stains and should be used only if your teeth are not badly stained.

Type 2: Home Teeth Whitening Kits - These use peroxide based bleaching agents that are placed in mouth trays for extended or overnight exposure. They can also be bonded to strips which are placed on the teeth for half an hour at a time. Different brands give different results, but basically they all work to whiten the teeth after 2 weeks to a month. The degree of whitening will depend on how well they are used without professional supervision.

Type 3: In-Office Dental Treatments - These involve much higher concentrations of peroxide bleach formula placed on the teeth by a dentist or dental professional. Some forms of treatment also involve an accelerating agent such as a laser, a heat source or a special light source. These treatments can often show dramatic whitening with a single one hour office visit, but they can cost $500 - $1,000.

These three techniques will obviously appeal to different people. Types 2 and 3 are the most effective, but type 2 is recommended if you are on a limited budget. To make a wiser and more accurate decision, you are encouraged to explore the various techniques in more detail.
